Surviving the Holidays on a Diet

So just how do you get through all the holiday parties and all the temptations that go along with them. From rich main dishes with sauces to yummy desserts and fancy alcoholic drinks.  The temptation could drive you mad!

Here are some helpful hints to help you navigate your way through the parties.

  1. Never starve yourself before a big meal.  It will just make you eat more and feel so guilty later.
  2. Investigate the event before you even arrive.  Try to find out what foods will be on hand.  If possible, eat a light healthy snack before you even arrive to the event so you don't load up on unhealthy snacks.
  3. Choose more veggies for appetizers and use a smaller plate to load up.
  4. Find time for a walk prior to the event.
  5. Skip the chips and pretzels for nuts such as Almonds, Pistachios, Hazelnuts or Walnuts
  6. Skip the rich desserts and instead hunt for dark chocolate covered nuts
  7. Remember to stay hydrated.  The winter months dry us out.  Whether in your home or in the car.  Remember to hydrate with the proper fluids.  If you plan to drink alcohol, remember to drink a water in between alcoholic beverages and ALWAYS use a designated driver!
  8. If you are cooking for a holiday, make healthier meal choices.  Cut back on the rich creamy sauces.  There are so many healthy ways to cook using less calories but having rich flavors with fresh herbs and spices!
  9. Don't ask for seconds.  Instead, wait 15 minutes and drink a full glass of water.  You will be surprised at how you feel.
  10. Chew Gum!  This works especially well while you are cooking!
  11. Add fun and games!  Add some great group games to the mix like Pictionary or Charades.  Better yet, get outside and join in on a scavenger hunt, build a snowman or go ice skating!
  12. Don't forget to travel smart as you head down the road to visit the relatives.  Pack your own snacks and healthy lunches.  Avoid the dreaded drive through joints.  You will feel so much better when you arrive without a lunch filled with salt and preservatives.

Enjoy the holidays and remember Destination Fitness will be on hand to help you make 2014 a healthy year!
