Exercise During & After Cancer Treatment

The last thing you probably want to think of during cancer treatment is exercise. However, research shows there are many benefits in exercise before, during and after treatment.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) recently issued the first-ever evidence-based exercise guidelines for adults in active cancer treatment. Their findings have left little doubt that staying physically active improves symptoms and side effects in patients undergoing chemotherapyradiation therapy, or both. It also helps those who have had surgery or are recovering from surgery recover faster with fewer complications.

The type of exercise that is best for you depends on your specific diagnosis, treatments and your doctor’s recommendations.   However, a balanced program that includes cardiovascular exercise and strength training is generally recommended. The intensity of the exercise should be low to moderate, and you should consult with your health care team to find what works best for you.  Exercise during cancer treatment may help the following:

  • Fatigue: Exercise can help improve fatigue and energy levels
  • Mental health: Exercise can help with anxiety, depression, and stress
  • Physical function: Exercise can help maintain strength, fitness, and mobility
  • Quality of life: Exercise can help improve quality of life and the ability to do daily activities
  • Sleep: Exercise can help improve sleep quality
  • Bone health: Weight-bearing exercises like walking and jogging can help strengthen bones and slow bone loss
  • Muscle mass: Strength training can help increase lean muscle mass and reduce body fat
  • Range of motion: Stretching exercises can help improve range of motion in the arms and shoulders
  • Treatment response: Exercise may help improve how the body responds to some cancer treatments
  • Cancer recurrence: Exercise may help reduce the risk of some cancers coming back
